HIKE TO PUMAMARKA

HALF DAY – DIFFICULTY LOW

Hidden in a valley close to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the Inca ruins of Pumamarka are just a few hour-walk from the famous Inca village of Ollantaytambo. These two places were connected by an old Inca road providing communication between them and this road, after more than five hundred years, is still preserved. Our car will drop us close to the archeological area of Pumamarka from where we start our hike. Following our guide we will explore the site and later, strictly walking close to the guide, we will take the Inca road leading to Ollantaytambo.

ruina pumamarka

The archeological site of Pumamarka -

These buildings mainly served military purposes and were constructed during the Imperial Inca Period (1450-1533). We can see details that give us a clue of how these buildings were constructed and also show a strong defensive wall. If we accept what the ancient chroniclers say, this was the place where one of few battles between the Spanish and the Incas took place and where the Incas won. The Inca Road – This is one of the best occasions where we can get to know the old Inca road network. This path is well-preserved and situated among beautiful landscapes. We pass through an immense Andean area and still can see the irrigation systems developed by the Incas. As the path goes above the valley we can enjoy a spectacular view all through the walk.
