Sangarara - Wajra Pukara

Early in the morning our private transport will pick you up from your hotel and after a 3-hour-travel, we will arrive at the town of Sangarara (3700 masl) where we will meet our porters. From here we start our hike. During the first part of the trek we will be crossing a prairie which is characterized by its large number of cattle, this is due to the good quality of the pastures here. As we leave the prairie, the landscape narrows. Once we leave this part behind the path will climb to a creek, which is the steepest part of the trek. In the gorge we will see several herds of alpacas and llamas who thrive here due to the abundance of water and the presence of grass in this area. At the end of this section we will reach a highland area dominated by tall grass such as the Andean Ichu, and a gently sloping path takes us to the pass of Wajra Pukara (4570 masl) where we will see the gorge Iskay Kocha. Once reaching this point we will begin our descent to the archaeological site of Wajra Pukara. Leaving behind the high Andean plains to the Apurimac canyon the landscape changes. At Wajra Pukara (4000 masl) we can see how the canyon opens up and dominates all as far as the eye can see. This complex is located on a natural rock formation and is composed mainly of religious buildings and terraces. Overnight we will make our camp in the area adjacent to the ruins.
